When we talk about our Moisture Duo, we are are talking about the synergistic combination of our Nourish & Replenish Oil and our Mineral Mists to create an instant and customized moisturizer in the moment. Together, they support the skin’s natural processes by providing nourishment for healthy cell growth while strengthening structural integrity.
We do this by dripping 3 drops of Nourish & Replenish Oil into the palm of our hand and pumping 5 sprays of the Between You & The Moon Mineral Mist of our choice directly into the oil to emulsify them together.
We recommend this method for use in the morning after gently bathing our faces with warm water or an herbal infusion (tea). We don’t think moisturizing is necessary or particularly desirable at night, as nighttime is a great time for us to allow our skin to perform metabolic functions and renew on its own.
Conventional moisturizers (creams and lotions) are complex emulsions. They need emulsifiers, binders, stabilizers and preservatives to get together, stay together, and not “go bad.” Keeping the oil portion and the water portion separate until the moment we use them means that none of those additives are needed. In 2006, Between You & The Moon (Marie-Emma Graves in particular) came up with the idea of spraying our Mineral Mists directly into our Nourish & Replenish Oil with the intention of creating a fully functioning moisturizer that can be used daily to promote healthy, functioning skin for the long term. She called this a Moisture Duo.
What Considerations Should I Make When Choosing Oils and Mists?
We want to see people taking their health and beauty into their own hands, though it can be tricky and confusing—especially when you are already starting with compromised or depleted skin. There is a reason that skincare formulations work. Most of the time, they are developed by people who have extensive knowledge of the skin and what the products will do to it both short term and over the long haul.
We are aware that there are other skincare companies out there that use oils and mists but give very different directions than us, such as layering. As we have not used those products, we don’t know if it “works” or not (there are many methods of doing things that work!) and urge you to listen to the producers of those products as for how to use THEIR products. For Between You & The Moon’s (by Brooklyn Herborium) products we recommend following OUR directions.
In addition, you can certainly use whatever mist you want and spray it into whatever oil you want and see how it works for you. Perhaps you will find that the oil penetrates better or that you feel less dry or irritated than you once felt before. That’s great!
A lot of information is available online from people who have made transformations in their skin using their homemade products, but just because it worked for them in the amount of time it took to make a blog and online store does not make it sustainable for the bulk of people over time. For best results, you may want to see how good it can be using our proven methods and then go ahead and have fun being a kitchen alchemist (possibly after taking a workshop at our Windsor Terrace Location!) with these loving limitations that will pull you through once the quick-fix has worn off.
Using the Nourish & Replenish Oil with one of our Mineral Mists is an extremely effective way of giving the skin what it needs topically in a way that closely resembles the skin’s natural functions and processes without the need of any artificial chemicals or preservatives.
Our Nourish & Replenish as the Oil Portion
Developed over 3 years of clinical use and formulated with the Fibonacci Ratio and the physiological make-up of sebum (the skin’s natural oils) in mind, Nourish & Replenish (as part of your Moisture Duo) is just the right proportion of molecular lipids, fatty acids, and surface rebuilders (“messengers”) to keep healthy skin functioning well or to gently nudge dysfunctional skin back to equanimity. In more recent years, studies keep popping up that remind us that this formulation still holds water… (get it…holds water…? I crack myself up) and it smells really, really good.
Our Mineral Mists as the Water Portion
Our mists are unique in two ways:
- We use hydrosols (water that has been distilled through plant materials, picking up their essences and adding the lovely aroma and active properties of the herbs they have been distilled through) which are shelf-stable for a long time (reducing the need for a preservative that could also act like an antibiotic or do damage!) and have a naturally-occurring pH that is slightly acidic—like the preferred pH of the skin.
- Our remineralization process mimics fresh spring mineral water that has passed through ancient passages, picking up desired minerals that our bodies can use. By including these necessary minerals at ratios that resemble the saturation of our cells, the body is enticed to accept them trans-dermally—taking what it needs through the skin and rejecting what it doesn’t.
When Is It Advisable to Use Other Between You & the Moon Oils as Part of a Moisture Duo?
Transformational Uses of Our Oils
Your esthetician or holistic skin care specialist can help you determine if you would benefit from using one of our other oils as part of your Moisture Duo for transformational results. Our transformational methods use a more targeted approach to help you move from where you are to beautiful, functional skin in a more direct manner. Once your transformational phase is over, you will want to return to the functional use of the products again.
No Evil for Over-Reactive Skin
6-8 weeks before moving to Nourish & Replenish
When sensitized skin has been broken down too much in the past and is severely compromised, we recommend starting with NO EVIL to begin rebuilding the proper ratios of oil and water and then switch over to Nourish & Replenish (for it’s nourishing properties) once equanimity has been reached. No Evil as part of your Moisture Duo is the best option to bring skin that tends to be over-reactive to a place where it’s ready to accept the nourishment that Nourish & Replenish has to offer. You can start with Nourish & Replenish and get there eventually, but it will seem to take longer for the reactivity to decrease. (It doesn’t, actually…but that’s another story for another time) The nearly un-damageable, large molecule make-up of it (energetically restructured to vibrate at a frequency that resonates at a level that we want to be drawn to) makes it ideal for allowing the skin to rebuild without added inflammatory response. After about 6-8 weeks, you will want to switch to Nourish & Replenish for the Moisture Duo in order to get the proper ratios of balancing oils and the herbal nourishment that Nourish & Replenish offers.
Cow Fart Juice for Biome Rehabilitation
8-10 weeks before moving to Nourish & Replenish
Cow Fart Juice is useful when the skin tends towards structural integrity damage in addition to barrier damage, preventing scars and pigmentation issues during troubling times, but does not actively promote barrier repair. It can, however, make a good option if the barrier trouble is resulting in bacterial or fungal infections that need to be “managed.”
Use Cow Fart Juice as the oil portion of your Moisture Duo when there is an active biome issue while taking steps to rehabilitate the dysbiosis. When symbiosis has been restored (no more active pus is forming—could take 4-16 weeks) move on to Nourish & Replenish oil.
Seeds of Change for Renewal
3-6 weeks before returning to Nourish & Replenish
Seeds of Change is useful for healthy skin to maintain radiance. The antioxidant, surface-rebuilding characteristics make the skin “slightly nervous, slightly excited” in order to provoke a response in the skin that says, “Yes! I can step up my game…let’s renew!” It can be used for 3-6 weeks as part of your Moisture Duo and then you will want to return to Nourish & Replenish Oil for 2-4 months.
If you’re unsure if you should be using Nourish & Replenish or a Transitional Oil in your Moisture Duo, we recommend booking a facial or a consultation with one of our skincare specialists. See the links below.
